Together with Peace Boat US’s Music & Art Peace Academy (MAPA), non-profit organizations Universal Models for Peace, Mythic Bridge, Parties4Peace, and DCTV will undertake a unique project that supports both sustainable development projects in Panama’s indigenous Kuna community, and travel-learning opportunities for youth from the NYC area, onboard Peace Boat’s 88th Global Voyage between Mexico and Panama (October 24-29, 2015). The NYC students will practice videography and produce a short documentary about their experience onboard the Peace Boat and meeting and learning about the Kuna people during an exchange program in Panama. At the same time, the four partnering NGOs are fundraising in partnership with the Kuna community for various construction materials requested by them; another aspect about which the students will focus on and learn about. We invite you to join us in this project to foster sustainable development and travel-based experiential learning in arts and culture for young people from the NYC area!
Why is this important?
Historically, the Kuna indigenous community has been marginalized within Panama, and currently face various challenges in improving the living conditions of the population. Of particular concern to Kuna community leaders are conditions including poor sanitation, lack of waste disposal systems for latrines, and lack of proper roads. During our visit to the Kuna indigenous village this fall, we will support the Kuna community in sustainable development projects addressing these issues.
